CHAPLET OF THE FIVE WOUNDS
The Chaplet of the Holy Wounds is a Catholic devotional prayer that focuses on the five principal wounds Christ suffered during His Passion: those in His hands, feet, and side. This devotion gained significant momentum during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, particularly with the revival of religious life and the enthusiasm of Crusaders returning from the Holy Land.
The purpose of this chaplet is to remember and contemplate the immense suffering Jesus endured for humanity's salvation. It emphasizes the love of Christ, who offered Himself in sacrifice to the very end, with the wounds serving as an "illustrious mark of love".
This chaplet consists of five sets of five oval black beads (7mm x 9mm) separated by an oval picture medal. These medals show the Wounds of Christ on one side and Our Lady of Sorrows on the other. It begins with an oval picture medal on which you can pray the Anima Christi prayer followed by three beads (Our Father; Hail Mary; and Glory Be); then while meditating on each wound, pray five Glory Be’s and one Hail Mary in commemoration of the Sorrowful Mother.
The Chaplet of the Holy Wounds serves as a powerful means for the faithful to express humility, seek divine assistance, and unite in communal supplication, especially in times of danger or evil.
