Velázquez's Coronation of the Virgin is exceptional for being a rare religious work by an artist better known for his portraits, and for the air of naturalness and simplicity not found in works by other Baroque religious painters. It is interesting to note that this composition is in the shape of a heart with the Virgin Mary in the center reinforcing the imagery of the heart by pointing to her own heart. God the Father and God the Son are shown on either side of Mary together holding her crown above her head with the Third Person of the Trinity, depicted between them in the form of a white dove. All three images of the Holy Trinity are on a level plane representing their equality as the Triune God. Beneath Mary’s feet are several cherubs, illustrating another interesting hierarchy placing Mary above the angels as Queen of the Angels.
