LEGEND OF THE LADYBUG ROSARY BRACELET
This Italian rosary bracelet is made with 10 red Ladybug beads with small hematite spacer beads on a stretch cord with a gold-tone cross and a Marian medal. The impetus for the Ladybug beads was the legend of the ladybug that recounts that in “Europe during the Middle Ages, when swarms of insects attacked the crops, threatening Europe with starvation, Catholic farmers asked the Virgin Mary, Our Lady, to save them from this insect plague. In answer to their prayers, a cloud of small, black-spotted, red insects arrived, devoured the pests, and saved the crops. The grateful farmers named them ‘Our Lady's Bugs’, which became 'Ladybugs'. The red wings represent the Virgin Mary's red cloak and the 14 black spots were thought to represent her seven joys and seven sorrows."
