MATER ECCLESIAE (MADONNA OF THE COLUMN) - ST. PETER'S BASCILICA - 10 1/2" x 18 1/2"
This beautiful print features Mary, Mater Ecclesiae (Mother of the Church), inspired by one of the most significant Marian images associated with St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The original ancient image of Madonna della Colonna is housed inside St. Peter’s Basilica near the front left altar. In 1981, a large exterior mosaic replica was commissioned and installed on the outer Vatican wall overlooking St. Peter’s Square, making the image visible to pilgrims from around the world.
Installed on December 7, 1981, the mosaic bears the inscription “Totus Tuus”, a phrase closely associated with Saint John Paul II’s Marian devotion. On the following day, after praying the Angelus, Pope John Paul II blessed the mosaic and expressed his hope “that all who come to St. Peter’s Square may raise their eyes to Mary, to greet her with filial trust and prayer.”
The title Mary, Mother of the Church recognizes Mary’s unique role as the spiritual mother of all Christians and her deep connection to the life of the Church. While the theological roots of this title trace back to the early Church, the Feast of Mary, Mother of the Church is celebrated on the Monday after Pentecost, officially added to the Roman Calendar by Pope Francis in 2018.
This print is beautifully framed in a decorative gold wood frame with a sawtooth hanger and comes ready to hang.
