OUR LADY OF THE SNOWS STATUE - 7"
The Blessed Virgin Mary, Patroness of Rome, is depicted in this statue wearing a pale gown with a light blue mantel holding the young Child Jesus in her arms.
It is made of a plaster-resin mix and measures approximately 7”H.
The title Our Lady of the Snows comes from a legend about a miraculous snowfall in Rome in 352 A.D. Both Pope Liberius, and a wealthy Roman couple, childless and praying to Our Lady for an heir, received a message from The Virgin Mary in a dream, requesting that a church be built in her honor and the site for this church would be identified by a covering of snow. The next day - a hot morning on the 5th of August - Esquiline Hill was covered with snow! All Rome proclaimed the summer snows a miracle, and a church to honor Mary was built on the hill in 358 A.D. Restored and refurbished several times, this church, now the magnificent Basilica of St. Mary Major, still stands today as the seat of devotion to Our Lady of the Snows in the Catholic Church.
