In the mid-1600's, devotion spread to the Cross of St. Benedict, and a medal was made to honor him, because he was considered a secure defense against the tricks of Satan. The honor of being featured on the medal was conferred to him because of the miracles of the cross in his hands. In the mid 1600s, devotion to the Cross of St. Benedict spread widely as the saint was regarded as a powerful defender against the snares and deceptions of Satan. A medal was created in his honor, bearing sacred symbols and inscriptions associated with the miracles attributed to the cross he carried. Because of these miracles, St. Benedict was granted the unique distinction of being depicted on the medal itself.

1880 at Saint Martin Abbey in Beuron, Germany, at the request of
Monte Cassino Prior Boniface Krug, O.S.B. The design reflects the long standing Benedictine tradition and spiritual authority associated with the medal, making it one of the most revered sacramentals in the Catholic Church.
