It’s important to note that Saint Martin was treated terribly in his life as a person of mixed race. At the time in Peru in which Martin lived, he wasn’t even permitted to become a full member of a religious community because of his race.

- Patron saint of mixed-race people, barbers, public health workers, innkeepers and those seeking racial harmony
- Martin worked as a servant for the Dominicans and did menial tasks, like cleaning but he considered his work to be important and holy
- The sympathetic prior of the community decided to disreguard the law and accept Martin as a vowed member of the Third Order of St. Dominic. He is depicted in the habit of the Dominican lay brother
- He is shown with animals because he had a great respect for all living creatures
- After Martin received the holy habit, he worked in the infirmary where he cared for nobles and slaves alike who came to the community for help. He also founded an orphanage
- Martin was a great friend of St. Rose of Lima and lived a life of love and service to all
- He was a defender of racial justice and continues to be a powerful heavenly patron for all those seeking racial harmony

These unique statues are made in Colombia. Each one is individually hand-painted by talented women who are either widows, single mothers, or those who are sole providers for their families. Slight color and design variations may occur.
