THE CORONATION OF THE VIRGIN - Lorenzo Monaco - 11" x 18 1/2"
This beautiful giclée print is a replica of the original artwork of Lorenzo Monaco (ca. 1407). It is framed in an antiqued gold wood frame with a finished back and wire hanger.
Christ and His mother, Mary, are seated on a throne. While Jesus places a crown on her head, Mary crosses her hands on her chest in a gesture of acceptance. This is the Coronation of the Virgin, a popular subject in medieval Italy where Mary was especially revered. According to medieval Christian belief, her soul was carried up to heaven and she was crowned as Queen of Heaven.
This colorful piece is a perfect example of early Renaissance painting. It was originally at the center of a large multi-paneled altarpiece painted by Lorenzo Monaco for the monastery of San Benedetto in Florence, Italy.
