THE GREAT ARCHANGELS ICON TRIPTYCH
This triptych features an icon of the three great Archangels: St. Michael on the center panel; St. Raphael on the left; and St. Gabriel on the right.
Saint Michael, whose name means “Who is like God”, is depicted holding a sword in his right hand and an orb with an image of Christ the Pantocrator (Almighty Ruler) in his left hand. St. Michael is the protector of the Church and the Terror of Demons.
Saint Raphael, whose name means “God heals”, is depicted holding a physician’s stylus in his right hand and a box in his left. He is a prominent figure in the book of Tobit.
Saint Gabriel, whose name means the “Power of God”, is depicted holding a lantern in his right hand with a lighted candle declaring that Christ is the Light of the World that will never be extinguished and in his left hand he holds an orb with a cross on it.
The images are stamped on gold and silver foil and mounted on three panels of wood each joined with two brass hinges.
Measures 5 1/16"H x 8 1/2"W when open, and approximately 4 1/16”W when closed.
