MATER ECCLESIAE (MADONNA OF THE COLUMN) - ST. PETER'S BASCILICA - 11 1/2" x 13 1/2"
Madonna of the Column – Mater Ecclesiae Framed Print
This beautiful print features the recently restored Madonna of the Column, also known as Mater Ecclesiae (Mother of the Church). Originally painted in the early 15th century by an anonymous but gifted artist, the original fresco is enshrined in the front left altar of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
After the attempt on his life on May 13, 1981, Pope St. John Paul II wished to honor Our Lady’s protection by placing an image of her on the exterior of the Apostolic Palace. The ancient fresco of the Madonna of the Column was chosen as the model for the mosaic that now looks out over St. Peter’s Square - a pledge of Our Lady’s motherly care for the pope and the entire Church.
- Ornately framed in a gold wood frame
- Measures 11 ½” W x 13 ½” H
- Made in the USA
A meaningful devotional image and a powerful reminder of Our Lady’s protection over the Church.
