- The original cross, fashioned about 1100 A.D., hangs in Santa Chiara Church in Assisi
- When in 1257, the Poor Clares moved to Santa Chiara, they took the San Damiano Cross with them and still guard it with great solicitude
- The crucifix now hanging over the altar of the ancient church of San Damiano is a copy
- All Franciscans cherish this cross as the symbol of their mission from God to commit our lives and resources to renew and rebuild the Church in the power of God
- The San Damiano crucifix is actually an icon crucifix, as it has additional figures besides the corpus
- On the left side of the cross are the Virgin Mary and St. John the Evangelist. On the right side are Mary Magdalene, Mary, Mother of James, and the centurion who in Matthew’s Gospel account asks Christ to heal his servant. At the very top of the cross the Resurrection is depicted
- Handcrafted in the USA, this wall cross measures 15 1/2”W x 20 1/4”H and comes with a sawtooth hanger
- It is framed in beautiful gold molding
